Joe Maloney
Design, UX, Product Strategy and Management

I began my design career over 15 years ago as the design lead for one the largest streaming video platforms. I would later lead mobile application design for companies such as New Line Cinema, Billboard and News Corp.

I helped pioneer mobile social networking by leading the design and development of MySpace Mobile. This application facilitated a paradigm shift in communication, making mobile social networking the next de facto communication platform.

Later projects include creating one of the most successful event platforms in the world, designing user-centric enterprise applications for the biotech firm Amgen, and helping re-define the way we interact with mobile devices by designing OS-level interactions for Sony.

Along this journey,  I have managed and mentored designers and product managers who have gone on to lead design and development at companies such as Apple and Samsung.

SearchIQ (a subsidiary of Ad.net) is a leading search as a service (SaaS) company.  The engagement included leading an eight-person team to relaunch the offering with flexible integration and payment options, better access to actionable information (search analytics) and a more sophisticated visual identity. Additionally, the customer support overhead was reduced with the use of video-based tutorials.

In addition to reaching new markets, the relaunch generated an immediate and significant lift to sales.

Focus

The leading cause of death for teenagers is distracted driving. Focus tackles the issue by providing positive stimulus for good behavior (rewards for not using your phone while driving), while enabling communication via a specially designed voice user interface (VUI).

Additionally, the application has the ability to assess the cognitive load of the driver, enabling communication only when it’s safe to do so.

Revel
UX, Product Design, Interaction Design, Branding and Strategy
2014

Salvaged a failed startup focused on casual betting/gambling by developing an experience that supported the core objective of getting people to bet on games. This was achieved by simplifying the UX - i.e. creating an app experience that simply asked the users’ opinions on upcoming games.  We created a new brand identity that was more appealing to the target demo by leveraging “hipster” design patterns and a more casual and playful feeling design.

Angie’s List
UX, Design, and Product Strategy
2013

I led UX and design to expand Angie’s List’s business from a contractor-rating business to an on-demand service, e.g. a transformation to the Uber of home services.

The project included designing the consumer experience as well as the means for service managers and contractors to facilitate the projects.

Sony

SelectivePost aimed to transform online social communication into a more private and personal experience with privacy controls that provided real-life context.

SocialPlan became the most successful online event platform since eVite. It was the exclusive event platform for many prominent brands including Lady Gaga’s Fame Ball tour - the largest concert tour of 2009.

While conforming to MySpace’s style-guide, the UX was uniquely designed to promote targeted discovery and eliminate spam comments, one of MySpace’s more pressing problems at the time.

MySpace Mobile
